Operating Systems I (UNIX) explores the concepts, terminology, and fundamental features of operating systems in general and the UNIX operating system in detail, using Linux as the primary tool. The characteristics of a multi-user, multi-tasking, multi-threaded operating system will be examined in detail. Aspects of connectivity using TCP/IP protocols, and application services such as FTP, SSH, and web servers will be introduced. The command-line user interface will be the central focus, allowing the student to use shell commands, the vi editor, and utilities such as sed and awk to construct and use command sequences to manipulate data and perform basic system administration tasks. The graphical user interface will be introduced and explored using XWindows. Projects will include installation and configuration of the operating system on a host machine. |
